Makeup can make a woman look and feel good, and an eye makeup plays a big part in it. Before explaining how to apply eyeliner I'll first talk about the many types of eyeliners. Then I will explain how to do a cat eye, a smokey eye and a basic eye for daytime.

The Different Types of Liner

There are three types of eyeliner: an eyeliner pencil, a liquid liner or a shadow eyeliner.

• Pencil eyeliner: Pencil eyeliner is the easiest to apply, but they tend to melt and usually won't stay on all day so you will need to set the line with eyeshadow on top of the entire line.

• Liquid or gel eyeliner: This is how you get that dramatic look. Liquid or gel eyeliner makes your eyes pop but if you are a beginner you will need to practice a bit to apply it the right way. Why? well, if you make a mistake you may need to remove it completely.

• Shadow eyeliner: The third type is to use your eyeshadow using a brush or the eyeshadow applicator. The advantage is that you can be more creative with this type of eyelinerbut you probably need to apply several coats to get the color you want.

How to Apply Liquid Eyeliner

Line the eye from the inner corner of the eye in one big sweep. Is that the only way to do it, you ask? Not really. Some people start from the middle out and then finish from the inner corner to the middle. This actually may be easier if you are just starting out. You can play with the thickness of the line to get different effects, especially if you want a more dramatic look! Once you done with the liner apply your mascara.

The Basic Daytime Eye

The thing here is to appear natural so use a brow (deep) instead of black eyeliner. So, use a pencil to trace the upper lashes from the inner corner of the eye, or use an eyeshadow if you will. Now, if you want to make it last longer you should use a liquid liner over it and then you set the line with an eye shadow. Once you've done that you apply an eye pencil or the eye shadow to the lower lashes. When applying to the lower lashes you can use a different color if you want. You apply it to the outside in and stop about half way across. Since we are going for the natural look you can use your fingers to smudge the line you just did at the lower lashes.

What do you have to keep in mind here? Colors must be blended well and don't overdo with the rest of your makeup. In this kind of makeup, the eyes are the stars.

• Prep the lid with a primer or an eye shadow base (you can even use concealer). That's because you want to keep eyelids oil-free.

• Apply eyeliner from the inner corner of the eye outward. Draw the middle of the line thicker( just a bit ) than the edges.

• Apply a deep color shadow over the eyeliner to set the line.

• Blende the shadow well then follow with the eyeshadow form a dark hue near the lashes to a lighter base color. It's important to remember to keep the dark color below the crease.

• For color on the bottom lashes you'll want to use an eyeliner pencil because you need something easy to smudge. Once the line is drawn, run your finger over it to smudge the line. You can also apply a bit of shadow to get full smudge effect.

• Finish with a mascara.

The Cat Eye

This is a nice look for evening. The key here is to apply a thin line to the inside rims of the lids.

• Apply liquid liner along the upper lash line from corner to corner of eye, extending the line upward at the outer corner of eye. Let liner dry.

• Apply liner only to the outer three quarters of the rim and extend the line upwards at the outer corners.

Bismuth Oxychloride in Mineral Makeup

Does this scenario sound familiar? You've worn traditional makeup for years with little to no irritation. Upon hearing about the benefits of mineral makeup, you decide to give it a try. After all, it claims to be better for your skin and healthier overall, so what have you got to lose? And if you've never been able to wear traditional makeup without irritation, mineral makeup sounds like the answer you've been looking for. You buy your first jar and begin wearing it immediately.

Except... you're having a reaction you've never had before to makeup. Your skin may be red, irritated, itching, having small bumps or pustules, burning or looking swollen. What is this? How can mineral makeup cause such an extreme reaction?

That reaction is likely caused by the ingredient bismuth oxychloride. While bismuth oxychloride is a common ingredient in traditional makeup, as well as mineral makeup, it is used in much higher concentrations in mineral makeup. There are no fillers in mineral makeup like there are in traditional cosmetics (talc, mineral oil, aluminum powder, alcohols and parabens), so the few ingredients left, including bismuth oxychloride, make up more of the recipe.

Why Is Bismuth Oxychloride Used In Makeup?

Is it used in makeup because it gives the makeup a silky feel, good slip (this means it applies well to the skin and doesn't drag or grab on the skin) and good adhesion, which helps it stay on your skin. It feels smooth and silky when rubbed between the fingers. It is often described as a lustrous crystalline powder.

It is not the most expensive ingredient, nor is it the least expensive. It is, however, an industry standard and very common. It also gives a visible sheen to the makeup, so it's good at refracting light and that helps draw attention away from, and camouflage, fine lines, wrinkles and minor discolorations. That's a great selling point for makeup.

What Is Bismuth Oxychloride?

Bismuth oxychloride is an inorganic white pigment, and usually comes in two forms: diamond and pearl finishes. The diamond is shimmery and the pearl is more matte. It's formula is BiOCl.

If you look on the periodic table of elements, you'll notice plain old bismuth at atomic number 83, with the symbol Bi. It is the least toxic of it's periodic table neighbors like lead, tin, antimony and polonium. Bismuth in itself is not safe for use in cosmetics, and must be refined and combined with other elements to produce bismuth oxychloride.

Bismuth occurs naturally, but in very small amounts. Most of the bismuth produced in the USA is as a by-product from refining lead, tin, copper, silver and gold ores.

Once the bismuth has been harvested, it is further refined through several processes to remove dangerous elements like lead. Then it is chlorinated, which gives us bismuth chloride (BiCl3). It still poses a severe risk at this point, smelling of hydrochloric acid. When bismuth chloride is combined with water, it starts to decompose and part of the chlorine is replaced by oxygen from the water. This process is called hydrolysis. The remaining compound is bismuth, chlorine and oxygen; Bismuth oxychloride.

Is It Safe To Use?

Bismuth oxychloride is a product that is FDA approved for use in products for the face, eyes, lips and nails. It is a very common and popular ingredient in both traditional and mineral makeup.

However, skin irritation from bismuth oxychloride is not unusual. According the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for bismuth oxychloride, there is a risk of it being a potential irritant to humans when it comes in contact with the skin or eyes.

It is also imperative that bismuth oxychloride be free from toxins when it hits the market. The FDA does have standards outlining this, and in their Electronic Code of Federal Regulations they dictate the composition must be free of impurities except lead, arsenic, volatile matter and mercury in specific amounts and must be 98% bismuth oxychloride.

Buying bismuth oxychloride from countries with less stringent laws may result in increased health risks, so it is wise for companies to buy from highly regulated countries, like the US and Canada.

Should I Use It?

This is a very personal question to answer. Are you are happy with your current makeup and are suffering no ill effects? Would you feel more comfortable using makeup without it? Do you find that you have to buff minerals with bismuth oxychloride into your pores or they are more obvious, and this is irritating your skin? Have you found using mineral makeup without it causes your skin relief and the reaction clears up?

These are all questions to ask yourself when deciding to purchase a brand with bismuth oxychloride as an ingredient. There are many good products available, offering the same benefits as products with bismuth oxychloride, but without the ingredient itself.

2. If the scar is discolored, use a corrector first in green (for red scars) or yellow (for bluish scars). Peach colors can also work with scars that have a blue tint. Use concealer after the corrector, if necessary, to even out the color to match the rest of your skin.
3. If applying foundation, put it on after using any wrinkle filler but before your concealer. If you apply foundation after concealer, you risk wiping off the concealer that you just worked so hard to apply. Also, you may need less concealer after applying foundation.
4. Always set your concealer with a loose powder. This will set it and keep your makeup from smearing during the day. This applies to both face and body makeup.

While it is possible to conceal your acne scars, it is still best to prevent them in the first place. Any time you get acne, whether it is just one pimple or many, treat it right away and keep your hands away from your face. Be particularly careful of any inflamed areas since these are the blemishes that are most likely to result in scars. There is no real substitute for the advice of a dermatologist when you have moderate to severe acne. However, do not wait until your acne is bad to start treating it.

For the most natural way to line your eyes, use a small, firm brush and apply eye shadow as your eyeliner. Make the most of your dark brown eyes, using soft pinks to really bring them out. Use brown mascara for day, and a black/brown mascara for evening or special occasions. Keep eyeliner to a minimum though. Just use it to softly frame your eyes. Avoid all black as it tends to be too strong. Chocolates, deep plums and charcoals smudged into your lashes will do the trick. You might like to try adding a very subtle contour in a soft mushroom color on your brow bone just above your crease and blend this softly.

On the days you feel like your eyes need a pick-me-up, jazz up your eye make-up a little. Graduating your eye makeup from at your lash line to your brow will give your eyes more depth. Use the darkest shade along your lash line, and merge into lighter shades nearer your brow. Contouring and shading can create the illusion of different eye shapes. By using dark to minimize and light to make larger, you can play with altering the length and size of your eyes. ?

If you just want to keep it simple, sweep a shimmery pastel shadow all over your lid, curl your lashes, apply 2 to 3 coats dark grey charcoal or dark brown mascara, and add a few individual false lashes on the outer corner of your eyes!

3. Then take violet and apply it in a "v" from the middle of your eyelid to the outer corner. Blend very, very well. You want it to look like a gradual change of color, not distinct lines.

4. Line your eyes with charcoal or dark gray eyeliner.

5. Apply mascara.

You can adjust the colors to be icy pink with fuchsia, light and dark turquoise, gold and taupe, gray and bright blue, light blue and bright blue, silver and bright blue, taupe and green, etc. The list goes on and on.

Many people these days have tattoos they wish they didn't. I am one of those people. I got my tattoos when I was only 17. Of course, I thought I knew everything about everything. What I didn't realize was that I would grow tired of my tattoos as I evolved from a rebellious teenager to a responsible wife and mom. So here I am, 30 years old with tattoos I hate. Once upon a time, when I was young and fair I was ambivalent about makeup. When I got married in the late seventies I very nearly did not wear any. It was only my bridesmaids persuasion that got me into any at all. Nearly thirty years later, makeup has to be one of my best friends. Since then I have undergone a metamorphosis into makeup woman, even (and I still can hardly believe this one applying it, advising on it and selling it).

Why the change? Well up until 20 years ago there was not one, my skin has always been good and spot free and like many women I did not feel I needed it apart from a swish from a mascara wand and a smear of something pale and barely there on the lips so I felt vaguely feminine. What brought the change? Training as an image consultant was one factor although at the time I was very keen on the idea of ignoring the makeup part of my course and just concentrating on colour and style. And I remember being pretty verbal when every time I turned up for training they (the trainers) made me put makeup on before we started. And the colours were not pale and retiring as I had been used to, but rich and vibrant a bit like my colouring.

The first traitor was my significant other who had been kind enough to be my chauffeur for the first week of training and consequently had viewed me waving him off as pale and uninteresting and returning as glam and colourful. He did not mention the transformation all week until it came up in conversation probably me expressing my horror at the whole thing, he said " ...actually I quite like it...". So the seed was set, my other half who I thought would not notice if I dressed in a bin liner and flip flops had not only seen my make up transformation every day but liked it! So I did complete the make up part of the course and I did start applying it to my clients. Hence over the years I have talked makeup with many women and I know that my original attitude to make up was not unusual as other people have said similar things. And wearing pale makeup is usually a sign that the wearer is not confident about the right shades to wear, this can make or break your look.

The Egyptians love for their paints can be seen today in the exquisite work of the jars found in the tombs, many with their contents still intact. Beauty was important to both men and women. A high-born lady of the time most important feature were her eyes. With the use of Kohl to emphasize the eyebrows and it was used to give their eyes their distinctive winged look. Not unlike the cat's eye look of today which is now created with the use of liquid eyeliner.

Moving on in our makeup history lesson.

Next we have the aristocratic women of ancient Greece who apart from enhancing the color of their lips with vegetable dyes, used very few cosmetics. The real users of cosmetics such as white face powder and Kohl was restricted to the courtesans, as a sign of their profession.

Roman women on the other hand couldn't use enough makeup. Some were known to be so enthusiastic about hair dyes and bleaches that partial or even total baldness often happened. The wearing of exotic wigs and using smelly conditioners to save the hair was often used to try to hide the facts of going bald.

After the fall of the Roman Empire makeup fell out of favor until around the 11th century when the Knights returned from the Crusades. The Knights reintroduced makeup, fashion and other toilet preparations that the women they left behind in the Palestine were using.

You know there had to be resistance but it didn't come from the women of that time period, no it came from the all mightily Church itself. Then around the 15th century and the time of the Renaissance that our natural love for all things of beauty were allowed a free reign.

Renaissance Makeup or lack of.

In the Renaissance time, makeup was an almost ghostly white complexion that was ideal for both men and women. It was thought of as a way to distinguish the upper class from the peasants and laborers in the fields. One of the biggest examples from the time period was Queen Elizabeth I of England. It was her use of cosmetics that popularize facial cosmetics among the women. The queen had a naturally fair complexion that was reinforced the fashion of whiter than white skin. With the use of egg whites, ground alabaster and clay, masks and that now infamous white lead, all these were used to aid in the illusion of super white skin.

In the 17th century makeup really had a major influence from the fact that theater became popular. That parts once played by young boys could now be played by young ladies. Young ladies playing the part of young ladies, who would of thought?

Moving on down in makeup's history time.

It was the 18th century that beauty and pain started walking hand in hand. All types of beauty aids of exceptional discomfort and as well as absurdity came about. Rouge was still popular as ever for men and women. This was the time that lipstick in pencil form was introduced and hair? Well hair took off in all types of strangeness. Hair styles were so complex and it took days sometimes even weeks to create. It was set and left as long as they could before redoing it. There was also time of bugs in hair, even mice were reported.

It was towards the end of the century public opinion turn against excesses of the earlier decades.

The Regency period of England saw a return to the more natural look were herbal preparations, many home-made came into favor. Face powder and rouge was still popular but the women of this time had to be more discreet about using it. Powdered wigs and complex hair styles also fell out of favor. The desirability for cleanliness as a health and beauty need was now widely recognized. Respectable Victorian ladies were even more demure with their uses of cosmetics. Barest a trace of rouge of the lips and cheeks was considered OK but they usually had to apply it in secret. Maybe this was the time it because fashionable for ladies to visit restrooms in groups like we do today.

Home-made skincare preparations and beauty hints with recipes were found in the women's magazines and journals of the day. Rich society women would visit Salons under disguises in fear of being found out that they were enhancing their looks.

Thank goodness for the popular actresses of the day because towards the end of the century, they helped pave the way towards a more liberal attitude using of cosmetics as beauty aids.

This takes us up to modern times before World War One.
